A mechanical keyboard differs from a membrane keyboard by having an independent switch under each key, which improves typing precision and consistency — a real advantage in games that require fast, repeated presses. Switches fall into three families: linear (fast and quiet, often preferred for gaming), tactile (a compromise between gaming and typing) and clicky (a pronounced audible feedback, better suited to typing than to streaming).
Layout matters too: a full-size keyboard keeps the numpad, a TKL layout frees up space for your mouse, and compact layouts (60-75%) maximise desk space at the cost of shortcuts you'll need to learn. Also check for anti-ghosting on the gaming key zones and, ideally, full n-key rollover so every key combination is recognised without limit.
